In FY 2021-22, only 10 percent was allocated for the purchase of defense equipment from domestic companies. In other words, the allocation was increased almost seven times in one go.

Union Budget 2022 was presented in Parliament on Tuesday by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. In addition to increasing domestic allocations for the defense sector, 25 percent has been allocated for defense research and development. Sitaraman said non-governmental organizations, startups, and educational institutions would also be involved. An independent organization will also be formed to test the technology of the private sector.

This year, the Center has increased the allocation for the defense sector by 13 percent. The allocation has been increased from 1.35 trillion in FY 2021-22 to  1.52 trillion in FY 2022-23. The allocation for the Ministry of Defense has been increased from 4.6 trillion in FY 2021-22 to  5.25 trillion this time.

On the same day, Sitaraman Balan said in Parliament, “Our government is committed to increasing self-reliance by reducing the import of foreign equipment for the army. Therefore, it has been decided to increase the domestic allocation for the purchase of defense equipment in the fiscal year 2022-23 as compared to the previous fiscal year. ” He also spoke of increasing the reliance on artificial intelligence, geospatial technology, and drones to strengthen the military.
